What you need to reside in Botswana

Persons wishing to reside in Botswana must comply with the immigration laws and regulations of the Republic of Botswana, administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The specific requirements depend on your nationality, purpose of stay, and duration.

📋 Residence Permit

Foreign nationals wishing to reside in Botswana for longer than the period allowed by their entry visa or visa exemption must apply for a residence permit. Residence permits are issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIC) in Gaborone.

Types of residence permits include:

  • • Temporary Residence Permit — For employment, business, study, or accompanying a spouse/dependant
  • • Permanent Residence Permit — For those who have resided in Botswana continuously for a minimum prescribed period
  • • Dependent Permit — For spouses, children, or other dependants of permit holders

💼 Work and Employment Permits

Foreign nationals who wish to work in Botswana must hold a valid Work Permit, in addition to a Residence Permit. Work permits are administered by the Department of Labour and Home Affairs.

Applicants must demonstrate that the position cannot be filled by a qualified Botswana citizen. Most applications require sponsorship by the employer, proof of qualifications, a signed employment contract, and a clean police clearance certificate from the applicant's home country.

🎓 Student Permits

Students wishing to study in Botswana must obtain a Student Permit issued by the Department of Immigration. This requires a formal letter of admission from a recognised Botswana institution, proof of financial support, and valid health insurance coverage during the period of study.

🏠 Property and Long-Term Residency

Foreign nationals may purchase or lease property in Botswana subject to Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) guidelines and approvals. Non-citizens may apply for an Agricultural Permit or a Business Permit as a basis for residence if they are investing or establishing a business in Botswana.

⚠️ Important Notice

Immigration policies, fees, and requirements are subject to change. The Embassy of Botswana in Brussels does not process residence or work permits. These must be applied for directly with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Botswana, or through the relevant Botswana government authority. Always verify current requirements directly with the Botswana authorities before making plans.
